Why Purebred Berkshire Pigs?
The only pigs you find at Mulligan Creek Acres are Purebred Berkshires. Berkshires are a heritage breed of pig being the oldest recorded breed in Britain. It is rumored that Berkshires were discovered by Oliver Cromwell’s Army over 300 years ago. Berkshire pork is thought by many to be the Kobe beef of pork and in Japan is referred to as Kurobuta – meaning black pig in Japanese.
Berkshire pork can be found in the finest restaurants. It is prized for juiciness, flavor and tenderness. It is a pink-hued and heavily marbled meat. Pigs are unique because the fat they eat is redistributed into their muscle fiber, therefore pigs are what they eat. Our Berkshires’ diet contains custom milled, non-GMO, local grains and grazing on organically maintained pastures to further enhance the quality of their pork.
What is Kurobuta Pork?
Simply, Kurobuta pork is Berkshire pork. Berkshire Pork, also known in Japan as Kurobuta or “Black Pig.” The Berkshire breed was made popular in Japan due to its tenderness, flavor and juiciness. Over the years, the breed has often been referred to as the “Kobe Beef” of pork.
